By way of full disclosure, let me state up front that I took the phrase from the OED (where else?)--here's the context:
1884 ROMMELIN Brown-Eyes xiii, Saddened at the increasing tale of years and months...
I'm know we all enjoy playing with words. One of my favorites to toy with is "tale" (and related words tally, tallies, tales, etc.). Tale as in story. Tale as in number. Tales as in stories. Tales as in jurors, etc. "To live (on) tally" is to live in sin and "tally-ho" is both the call of the hunt and the name of a famous coach from London and Birmingham. Anyhow...
Let's have some fun.
Our first tale is T.C. Boyle's The Women. It may take me a while to get Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, et al. out of my head...I wonder if Boyle had that film in mind too (perhaps as an 'extracurricular' we could watch the movie)
Should we set a schedule? Start with chapter one? I've never done this virtually...so chime in.
I think that's the tally for today. Oh, and happy birthday to me. An auspicious day for a new venture (venture--another good word).
